Global conflict - Myth or reality?

The prospect of a new Global conflict

The rise of extremism, acts of terrorism, tragedies like 7/7 and 9/11 all point to the growing prospect of a new global conflict. Extremism no matter what form it takes needs to be addressed if we value our future. TI-UK seeks to empower those vulnerable to extremist teachings by engaging with them on the core values of humanity, their faith or traditions. We seek to enable them to embrace tolerance and value coexistence. If we are to succeed against extremism, we all have to do our bit. That is why Tolerance International -
UK has initiated a campaign to recognise the 7th of July as the National day of tolerance. To start doing your bit, take a moment and sign this petition.

Extremism in Religion

Religious extremism is commonly perceived to be an exclusively Muslim phenomenon, however what many people do not think about is that religious extremism can exist in all religions. The Bible Belt is a geographical location in the South and the Mid West of the United States, It consists of a highly conservative and religious Protestant population that may be considered to be extremists or fundamentalists. Bible Belters believe that their lives are completely controlled by God and that the future of the world is set out in scripture.  They also believe that US policy must be consistent with this prophecy.

What we understand of Islamic fundamentalism today has come to prominence at the beginning of the 80s. Fundamentalists have two main characteristics, be they Shiite or Sunni:

1- Fundamentalist cultures and ideologies are based on gender apartheid and sexual discrimination imposing what they claim to be Islamic laws. (the Laws of Sharia)
2 - To assume political power the fundamentalists will go to any length, even if they need to use violence

Extremism in politics

Extremism is an attitude which reflects itself in all aspects of our day to day lives.  Political parties need to be especially careful in the ways in which they pursue their policies particularly when they are in power. A clear example of extremism in politics in this country is the National front, a movement which discriminates against the basic rights of British citizens. We see the rise of such parties in France and other countries in Europe.

What do extremist policies consist of?  Where do you think the line should be drawn?
